Some of you reading this may have achieved the goals that you set a long time ago.

Some of you may have reached the pinnacle of your career or be getting close.

As motivated people, I expect that many of you are travelling up along a path towards achieving something really big.

You are on your way to success.

Well done.

A hard climb to the top

It may well have been a long hard journey with plenty of ups and downs but with hard work, determination, some help and a bit of luck – you got there or are about to.

Sometimes life can seem like climbing a mountain. Everything looks impossible when you first start. It probably still looks like a dream when you reach your ‘base camp’.

Nevertheless with perseverance and a plan you finally get to climb your mountain.

What a feeling when you get to the peak – when you finally achieve your goals – the most exhilarating feeling in the world when you reach the top of a mountain.

What’s that over there?

What do you think you would notice standing at the top of a mountain?

That mountain which you conquered – as you stand there proudly with your flag unfurled.

You can see everything around you.

You can clearly see the path that you took, what you passed on the way, the obstacles you went round.

However, imagine when you get to the top and look across, that you realise that you’ve climbed the wrong mountain?

Are you still happy or feeling somewhat disappointed?

You may have been promoted to a high level in your firm but is that what you really wanted?

Maybe you are now working 100 hours a week and have tremendous responsibility but never see your family.

You may have earned enough to buy the house of your dreams.

But maybe the mortgage repayments have been so high for such a long time, that you never got to spend your money on the really important things.

You may have achieved your goals – but were they actually your goals or somebody else’s?

Damn – even with tremendous success, your victory can leave you with a sickening emptiness in your stomach.

A severe case of altitude sickness perhaps.

In terms of the Himalayan peaks, you might well be up in the ‘death zone’ (where the air is so thin that your body is literally dying)

What do you do next?

Climb down, then scale the other peak

Many people are trapped at the peak. They have used all of their supplies on the way up. They think they cannot get down.

What’s the solution?

There has to be another way and there is. In simple terms – just climb down carefully and climb the other peak. Pursue the correct goal for once.

The good news is that once you’ve climbed one mountain, you can see the correct mountain from where you are.

You can see the correct path on the right mountain from your high vantage point.

With your experience, climbing another peak may not be as hard as you imagine, even if the correct mountain is much higher than this one upon which you are unhappily perched.

Need some help with your climb to the top ?

Wherever you are on your journey to the top, its always worth getting some independent help. This is what a coach can give you. A coach may have succeeded with the exact same goals that you are pursuing or maybe in some other challenging venture. Would you climb Mount Everest on your own?

If I’ve got you thinking, then I’d love to have a chat with you and find out about your mountain. What its like on your journey and what is at the peak?

Maybe I can help you get there – maybe I can help you get to the correct peak.

Curious?
